“BUDAREÍRIN – THE STORY OF TRANSFORMATIONS” OPENED 17. JUNE
On the 17th Last June, there was a public opening of the new exhibition of the Museum of Technology Búðareyri – The story of transformations in the Workshop, which has gone through major reforms. It was an extremely happy event attended by more than 200 people in exceptionally pleasant weather. Although the museum’s employees have been far from idle since the large landslide destroyed its building and museum property on the 20th. December 2020, this exhibition opening marks a major turning point in the museum’s work, we have started welcoming visitors again, two and a half years after the landslides.
The exhibition deals with the diverse and varied history of human life and economic activity on the small strip of land that Búðareyrin á Seyðisfjörður certainly is. Transformations characterize this story, which is presented based on several different themes; the port, the beginning of the settlement, trade and commerce, the Workshop, communication and the typewriter, the years of occupation and finally natural processes and landslides.
At the exhibition, there are no real collectibles on display, as the Vélsmiðjan is located in an unprotected danger zone. Instead, innovative means of communication and props are used.
The intention is that the exhibition will last until a new museum building is put into use on the museum’s allocated site in Lónsleirunn, hopefully within a few years.
The Museum of Eastern Technology would like to thank the community for the goodwill that has been shown to the museum,
the municipality as well as the public sector as well as a number of others, such as the community of museums and collectors, associations and those who supported the collection of the museum, among others at the Karolina meeting. The exhibition would not have seen the light of day if not for the Development Fund of East Iceland, the Incentive Fund of Seyðisfjörður, Múlaþing, the Museum Fund and the Ministry of Culture and Trade. It is also worth noting that Húsafridunorsjöður has funded renovations to the building.
We are grateful to all of you.
The workshop is open Monday to Saturday at 10-17 and from October by appointment.
