The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management in cooperation with the Icelandic Meteorological Office decided to evacuate the area and the rescue teams managed the project which took about forty-five minutes. Evacuations and warnings about not residing in the side of the houses that faces the mountain, reached houses in section C under Botnar from Dagmálalækur to Búðará, sections B and C above Gamli Austurvegur and houses at Austurvegur 42 and Hafnargata 18b-38a. Botnahlíð 9, 11 and 13 were not a part of the evacuation.
