Around 15:15 a landslide fell down along a stream beside Skaftfell and landed on the house and continued across the parking lot and landed on a gas station that is located across the street from Skaftfell. It is believed that the landslide spanned 20-40 metres and by Skaftfell it was around half a metre thick.
Sesselja Hlín Jónasardóttir was working at building a new house but had quit for the day because of the harsh weather. On her way home she stopped by Herðubreið community centre to use the toilet before continuing her journey. Right before she came to Skaftfell she saw how the landslide hit the house.
