Many people describe a chaos but also an experience of warmth and a power of
cooperation.
When Ólafía Stefánsdóttir comes to Herðubreið she experiences a lot of chaos. “The
police took matters in their hands and made us go into the cinema hall and were not even
thinking about Covid, many people were stressed out because of that, off course that was
at a time when there was a 10-person maximum in a place”. She also experienced quite
the conflict among townspeople and prepared herself to ask people to obey the evacuation
restrictions.
Many people experienced the situation in Herðubreið as a chaotic situation but that
evacuation went smoothly when people started departing from Seyðisfjörður. Residents
describe a lack of division of labour and organising when it comes to the evacuation
process, both between the evacuation personnel and residents.
Not everybody were all right with having to leave their homes and because of that the
atmosphere was emotive.
