We lost three of our buildings. Skipasmíðastöðin by the sea, which was a big building,
the lathe workshop and the machine workshop,” says Zuhaitz Akizu, director of the
museum. “There were also two storehouses in the harbour that were damaged a great deal
even though the landslide did not hit them directly, but they were damaged because of
waves that hit the buildings after the landslide hit the ocean.”
“In these challenging times the National museum of Iceland and the Blue Shield of
Iceland have offered their help and their specialists,” writes Zuhaitz. In the next few days
and weeks it will be clarified exactly how the museums objects will be salvaged, but the
representatives of the museum only construct their information on data from the response
parties in the area. According to Zuhaitz it will take weeks or months to assess the damage
that the Technical Museum has endured.
